چکیده

Spaceborne active radar remote sensing, e.g., radar altimeter (RA) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been playing an important role in the validation of numerical wave models, particularly in open ocean. Most forecast centres also use altimeter data in the wave data assimilation process. In this paper we present validation results based on the newly developed CWAVE_ENV algorithm. SAR wave mode data have been available since 1991 when ERS-1 was launched. Operational availability, however, began with the ENVISAT Advanced SAR (ASAR) wave mode data. The CWAVE_ENV algorithm yields independent Significant Wave Height (SWH) measurements from the ASAR wave mode data without the need of a priori information. Using the CWAVE algorithm, ASAR data can significantly contribute to global wave monitoring and assimilation. ASAR wave mode data have been processed covering the period from December 2006 to February 2007 using the CWAVE_ENV algorithm. Using both wave height measurements derived from the ASAR wave mode and RA data, we evaluated the performance of the operational DWD ocean wave model, particularly in stormy weather situations.

Error Analysis on ESA's Envisat ASAR Wave Mode Significant Wave Height Retrievals Using Triple Collocation Model

Nowadays, spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become a powerful tool for providing significant wave height (SWH). Traditionally, validation of SAR derived SWH has been carried out against buoy measurements or model outputs, which only yield an inter-comparison, but not an “absolute” validation. In this study, the triple collocation error model has been introduced in the validation of ...

Estimation of Two-dimensional Ocean Wave Spectra from Envisat Asar Wave Mode Data Using a Maximum a Posteriori Approach

Two-dimensional ocean wave spectra are measured from ENVISAT ASAR wave mode cross spectra on a global scale. The measurement is performed using a parametric retrieval scheme, which makes use of prior information taken from numerical wave models. The Partition Rescale and Shift algorithm (PARSA) is based on a partitioning technique, which splits an a prior wave spectrum into its wave system comp...

Envisat Wind and Wave Products: Monitoring, Validation and Assimilation

ENVISAT fast delivery RA-2 and ASAR wind and wave products are routinely received, monitored and validated at ECMWF. RA-2 wind speed product is of good quality. Although Ku-band significant wave height (SWH) product is slightly high, it is of high quality. The redundant side B of RA-2 produced SWH product of even better quality. The S-band wave height product is generally of good quality. The i...
